Why Some People Choose to Look Poor

Description

What if “dressing down” wasn’t a sign of poverty, but of power or philosophy? In this session, we’ll dig into why some people intentionally look poor, what messages that sends, and how class and appearance influence how we’re judged.

We’ll explore perception, consumerism, identity, and how appearance can be a tool or trap.

Questions list

1. When you see someone dressed very simply or “poorly,” what assumptions come to your mind?

2. Do you know someone who dresses humbly even though they can afford expensive clothes? Why do you think they do it?

3. If you could pick one outfit to represent your identity, what would it be, luxury or minimal?

1. Do you think people who dress rich are judged more positively (e.g. more competent)? Why?

2. Could looking poor be a kind of rebellion against consumerism and status symbols?

3. Do you believe “looks can kill” in social and economic opportunities?

4. Is there a risk in adopting a “poverty aesthetic”, does it romanticize real hardship?

5. How do class and power affect whose style is accepted vs judged?

6. If you were in a job interview, would you dress flashy or modestly? Why?

7. Do you think dressing down gives you freedom, or hides you from opportunity?

8. After today, would you ever try “looking poor” as a style experiment? Why or why not?
