Description

This session will focus on understanding and practicing active and passive voice in English. Voice in grammar refers to the relationship between the subject and the action in a sentence. In the active voice, the subject performs the action, for example: “The teacher explained the lesson.” In the passive voice, the subject receives the action, for example: “The lesson was explained by the teacher.”

During the conversation, we will begin by reviewing the basic structure of each form. Active voice generally follows the pattern subject + verb + object, while passive voice is usually formed with object + be + past participle (+ by subject). By comparing examples, we will see how meaning can shift depending on whether the doer of the action or the receiver of the action is emphasized.

The session will also highlight when to use each voice. Active voice is often clearer, more direct, and common in everyday conversation and writing. Passive voice, on the other hand, is useful when the doer of the action is unknown, unimportant, or when the speaker wants to place focus on the action itself rather than who performed it. For instance: “The window was broken last night.”

Through interactive activities and guided discussion, participants will practice identifying and transforming sentences from active to passive voice and vice versa. We will also look at examples from real-life contexts such as news reports, academic writing, and storytelling. By the end of the session, learners will have a stronger grasp of how to use both voices effectively, developing greater flexibility and accuracy in their English communication.

This session is designed to be engaging, practical, and conversation-based, ensuring that participants not only understand the rules but also feel confident applying them in speech and writing.
