Description

In this interactive grammar session, we will explore the correct use of “have to,” “must,” and “should”—three essential modal expressions that intermediate English learners often confuse. Though they all relate to necessity, obligation, and advice, each has its own meaning, tone, and appropriate context.

We will begin by looking at “have to”, a common expression for external obligations—things that are required by rules, laws, or circumstances. For example: I have to wear a uniform at work. You’ll learn when to use it in positive, negative, and question forms, and how it changes with different tenses.

Next, we will focus on “must”, a modal verb that often expresses strong personal obligation, rules, or logical conclusions. For instance: You must wear a helmet when riding a motorbike. We will also discuss how “must” sounds more formal or stronger than “have to” in certain contexts, and how it can be used to express deduction (She must be tired after such a long day).

Finally, we will examine “should”, a softer modal verb often used to give advice, make recommendations, or talk about expected outcomes. For example: You should drink more water. We will practice distinguishing between giving advice and expressing mild obligation, as well as forming negatives and questions.

Through examples, short exercises, and guided practice, participants will gain a clearer understanding of the differences between these expressions and become more confident in choosing the right one for the situation. Whether for speaking, writing, or comprehension, mastering “have to,” “must,” and “should” will help you communicate more precisely and naturally in English.
