Description

In this session, we will explore two very expressive and useful structures in English: “I wish” and “if only.” Both of these phrases allow us to talk about desires, regrets, or situations we would like to be different. They are common in everyday speech, films, and books, and mastering them can make your English sound more natural and emotionally rich.

We will begin by looking at “I wish” in different contexts. For example, when we say “I wish I could play the guitar”, we are expressing something we would like to do but cannot. Similarly, “I wish it wasn’t raining” shows how we can talk about a present situation we would like to change. We will also cover “I wish I had…” which refers to past regrets, such as “I wish I had studied harder for the exam.” Through guided examples and practice, participants will learn how to use these forms accurately.

Next, we will move on to “if only.” This structure is often used for stronger emphasis, showing a deeper sense of regret or longing. For instance, “If only I had come sooner” suggests a strong regret about the past, while “If only she were here now” expresses a present desire for a different reality. We will compare “if only” with “I wish” to see how they overlap and how they differ in tone and intensity.

The session will include plenty of examples, interactive exercises, and a conversation to help participants use these phrases confidently. By the end, you will not only understand the grammar behind “I wish” and “if only,” but also be able to use them naturally to express feelings, wishes, and regrets in your own conversations.
