Description

Even advanced English speakers sometimes struggle to express uncertainty or a lack of knowledge naturally. In everyday conversation, it’s common — and perfectly acceptable — to admit that you don’t know something, don’t have all the details, or would rather not give an opinion. Native speakers use many phrases for this: “I’m not sure,” “I don’t have that information,” “It’s hard to say,” or “I’d rather not comment.” Each expression carries a slightly different tone — from polite hesitation to professional caution. For example, in a work setting, you might say, “Let me check on that and get back to you,” while among friends you could say, “No idea!” or “Beats me.” Knowing how to communicate uncertainty helps you sound more authentic, polite, and confident, even when you don’t have the answers.
