In this intermediate level lesson, the students will talk about funerals in a light, cultural, and reflective way. They will learn how funerals are celebrated differently across the world, from clothing and food to music and traditions. The goal is to help students share ideas and experiences about how people honor the dead, reflect on cultural differences, and see that death is a normal part of life, not just something to fear.

Session Activities

Question 1: What comes to your mind when you hear the word funeral?

Question 2: What kinds of food are usually served during gatherings after funerals in your culture?

Question 3: If you could choose, what song would you like to be played at your funeral?

Question 1: In your country, what are the most common funeral traditions (clothes, food, music, or prayers)?

Question 2: Does your culture have a day to honor the dead, like Mexico’s Día de los Muertos? How do people celebrate it?

Question 3: In some cultures, people believe the spirit can be transferred to animals or objects. What do you think of this idea?

Question 4: How do people in your culture remember their ancestors after the funeral (special days, visits, photos)?

Question 5: Funerals in New Orleans often have music, dancing, and joy. Would you like funerals in your country to be like this? Why or why not?

Question 6: Some funerals include speeches or stories about the person’s life. Do you think this is important?

Question 7: Have you heard of unusual or strange funerals in other cultures? Can you share one?

Question 8: If you could design your own funeral, would you want it to be serious, happy, or something else?
