Do you have good manners?

Do you have good manners?

Conversation - B1-B2 | Intermediate Level

Description

Good manners are often described as the universal language of respect, but what counts as “polite” or “appropriate” can look very different depending on where you are in the world. This conversation session will explore the fascinating ways that cultures define, teach, and practice manners, and how these expectations can sometimes surprise—or even confuse—outsiders.

We’ll begin by considering the idea of manners as social rules that help people live together more smoothly. For example, something as simple as greeting someone can vary widely: in some cultures a handshake is the norm, while in others a bow, a kiss on the cheek, or even avoiding direct contact shows respect. Table etiquette is another area where cultural differences stand out—slurping noodles might be seen as rude in one country but a compliment to the chef in another.

Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences of cross-cultural encounters with manners, whether it’s a positive story of learning something new, or a funny misunderstanding that highlighted the differences. By comparing these perspectives, we will gain a deeper appreciation for how cultural values shape behavior and how awareness of these differences can prevent miscommunication.

The session will also touch on the role of manners in today’s globalized world. As people travel, study, and work across borders, adapting to different cultural expectations has become an important skill. Together, we’ll discuss practical strategies for showing respect in unfamiliar contexts and consider whether certain gestures—like kindness, patience, or gratitude—might be considered “universal manners.”

This interactive and inclusive session promises to be both thought-provoking and fun, leaving participants with fresh insights, useful tips, and perhaps even a story or two to share about the sometimes surprising world of good manners.
