English Pronunciation Practice
Good pronunciation isn’t about losing your accent. It’s about being understood easily, so people focus on what you say rather than how you say it.
Why it matters
Most misunderstandings come from a few things: unclear vowel sounds, the wrong stressed syllable, and flat intonation. Working on these gives you the biggest improvement for the least effort.
Tips that work
Learn word stress with new words
Every time you learn a word, learn where the stress goes: PHO-to-graph, pho-TO-gra-pher. Wrong stress causes more confusion than a wrong sound.
Use sentence rhythm
English stresses the important words and shortens the small ones. “I WANT to GO to the SHOP” sounds natural; giving every word equal weight doesn’t.
Shadow native speech
Play a short clip, then speak along with it, copying the speed, pauses and melody. A few minutes a day trains your mouth and ear together.
Record and compare
Record yourself reading a short paragraph, then compare it with the original. You’ll hear things you never notice while speaking.
Practice exercises
- Minimal pairs: ship / sheep, full / fool, think / sink
- Sentence stress: read a paragraph and underline the words you’d stress
- Intonation: say “Really?” as surprised, bored, and doubtful
